Nancy Beth Shuler is a painter whose work intertwines the natural world with deep emotional resonance, creating landscapes that are as much about inner experience as they are about external reality. Now based in Troy, Ohio, Shuler’s practice is shaped by a lifetime of movement—her early years spent in Springfield, Illinois, and across the Midwest before her family settled in California. This broad range of geographic influences, from the open plains to the rugged beauty of the San Francisco Bay, is embedded in her work, giving it both breadth and personal depth.
Shuler’s oil paintings, often abstracted portraits and landscapes, are infused with bold, emotive color and form. Drawing from the legacy of abstract expressionism and the refined compositions of Matisse, Cézanne, and Monet, she creates
works that invite the viewer to step into her emotional landscape. Her use of primal shapes and dynamic color schemes evokes a sense of energy and transformation, while her textured surfaces engage the viewer on a tactile level.
With a BFA and studies in Tuscany under the La Macina di San Cresci Artist Fellowship, Shuler’s work continues to evolve through her travels, from Florida to Tennessee and beyond. Her paintings have been exhibited locally, regionally, and internationally, and as a member of The Dayton Society of Artists, she thrives in a supportive creative community. In her work, Shuler invites us to explore not just the world around us, but the world within.
